‘Superman’ Soars With $55M Friday, Tracking $115M Opening Weekend – Midday Box Office Update

UPDATED FRIDAY MIDDAY: Warner Bros./DC Studios' Superman, directed by James Gunn, is off to a stellar start with an estimated $55 million opening day, including $22.5 million in Thursday previews. As of now, the film is on track for a $115+ million opening weekend, with some industry sources even seeing potential for a $120 million debut. The weekend is still unfolding, and there’s room for upward momentum.

Is Political Sentiment Impacting Performance?

The answer appears to be no. Despite speculation that political leanings might affect turnout, data from EntTelligence shows the film is performing exactly where it should demographically. For PG-13 family adventure films, red-leaning counties typically contribute around 33% of the box office, while blue-leaning counties account for 61%. For Superman, pre-sale data through Wednesday showed 60% of ticket sales from blue counties and 34% from red — well within the norm.

In other words, there’s no indication of a MAGA-related box office drag. Moreover, non-frequent moviegoers generally don’t base ticket-buying decisions on a director’s personal views.

Another positive metric: 44% of ticket sales so far are coming from major metropolitan areas (populations over 1 million), which aligns perfectly with industry averages for blockbusters. That’s a strong indicator of broad appeal across core markets.

All signs point to Superman flying high through the weekend.
